The purpose of this seminar is to give advanced PhD students an opportunity to present their research in a friendly academic environment and benefit from constructive criticisms. The seminar is a good opportunity to improve presentation skills, to get feedback from colleagues (Professorsand other PhD students), and to strengthen the Labex Réfi community in an informal meeting. Master students and other academics are welcome to attend the seminar and to contribute to the discussions.

The seminars will be held at the Maison des Sciences Economiques (106-112 Bd de l’hôpital 75013), in the seminar room at the 6th floor.


Program (9am-12am)

Each presentation is around 25 mins, followed by a 15 min Q&A.

Abstract: This paper presents an industry equilibrium model where firms can choose to engage in corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. We model CSR activities as an investment in customer loyalty and show that CSR decreases systematic risk. This effect is stronger for firms producing differentiated goods and when consumers’ expenditure share on CSR goods is small. We find supporting evidence for our predictions. In our empirical tests, we address a potential endogeneity problem by instrumenting CSR using data on the political affiliation of the firm’s home state and data on environmental and engineering disasters and product recalls. Le Laboratoire d’Excellence sur la Régulation Financière (Labex ReFi) est un centre interdisciplinaire de recherche, de formation et de valorisation dans le domaine de la régulation financière. Il réunit les chercheurs, doctorants et post-doctorants des quatre établissements partenaires (Paris 1, ESCP Europe, l’ENA, le CNAM) et de la Comue heSam,  autour de projets pluridisciplinaires ambitieux visant à faire avancer la connaissance théorique, sa mise en application et sa valorisation, en matière de régulation financière.

L’ambition du Labex ReFi est de s’imposer comme un acteur incontournable de la régulation financière.  A l’appui d’une recherche scientifique de qualité et d’un réseau de partenaires étendu (Parlement Européen, New York University entre autres), il a vocation à guider et conseiller les décideurs dans les milieux de la banque, de la régulation et des pouvoirs publics, ainsi qu’à former les futurs leaders de la régulation au sein de la première Ecole Européenne de la Régulation Financière.
